China's 2023 Travel Return: Opportunities for Global Tourism
abstract : China's 2023 travel rebound sparks interest in outbound tourism, with increased visa applications and convenient options, creating opportunities for global tourism enterprises.

In 2023, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China announced thrice—on January 20, March 10, and August 10—that domestic travel agencies and online travel companies can resume facilitating group tours and "flight + hotel" packages for Chinese citizens traveling abroad. This pilot program spans over 138 countries and regions.
This announcement has ignited the outbound tourism sector, including:
- Searches for popular foreign destinations on various Chinese travel platforms have surged, signaling a growing interest in outbound tourism.
- Visa applications have skyrocketed compared to the previous year, with some platforms reporting more than a 13-fold increase. This underscores proactive preparations for outbound travel's visa procedures.
- Around 25% of the third batch of outbound group tour destinations are directly accessible by flights, enhancing convenience for Chinese tourists overseas. This reflects an upswing in the availability of direct flights, easing outbound travel.
- As per platform statistics, outbound trips are anticipated to surge during the National Day holiday.
The number of Chinese tourists traveling globally is increasing steadily. This trend is expected to continue as the Chinese economy grows and tourists' spending power increases.
